Spirit Related Question Martini

a friend of mine who tends bar tells me that there is no such thing as a vodka martini. gin is the only true martini.-------Say it ain't so

Martinis were originally made with gin -- and a lot of vermouth. They were a lot smaller, too -- hence the phrase "three-martini lunch" New York admen made famous.

Currently (since the 1980s) the fashion is to make martinis with a vodka base. And mixologists have stepped out even further: practically any mixed drink made with vodka and served in a giant V-shaped glass is now called a martini.

Gin then, vodka now. That's the story.
